2017CR343

CRIME BRIEF: Colorado v. Mark Redwine

Victim: Dylan Redwine, 13

Defendant: Mark Redwine, 59 at time of conviction

Location: Vallecito, Colorado

Date of Incident: November 18, 2012

Status: Convicted; serving prison sentence

Summary:

In November 2012, 13-year-old Dylan Redwine traveled to his father Mark Redwine’s home in Vallecito, Colorado, for a court-ordered visit over Thanksgiving break. Dylan never returned home. Search efforts over the following months failed to locate him, but in June 2013, some of his remains were discovered in a rugged area several miles from Mark’s property.

Investigators uncovered evidence suggesting a strained father-son relationship, including allegations that Dylan had recently confronted Mark over embarrassing photos. Prosecutors argued that Mark killed Dylan during an argument and disposed of his body in the mountains.

Additional remains were located in 2015, and after years of investigation, Mark Redwine was arrested in 2017. He was charged with second-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death.

In 2021, following a jury trial, Mark Redwine was found guilty on both counts and later sentenced to 48 years in prison. He continues to maintain his innocence, but appellate courts have upheld the conviction.
